Ethnology Festival 2024

The Ethnology Festival 2024, held at the Ethnology Museum, was a captivating display of heritage, tradition, and creativity, where Serbian culture intertwined seamlessly with modern interpretations of classic fashion. Over two days, this prestigious event attracted a distinguished audience of diplomats, creatives, and cultural connoisseurs, including Serbia’s First Lady Tamara Vučić and Turkey’s First Lady. Hosted by the dynamic organizer Goga Grubješić, the festival bridged cultural divides, inviting attendees to explore Serbia’s vibrant heritage alongside contemporary global influences.

The event centered on the theme of "Heritage in Motion," highlighting the continuous evolution of traditional crafts into modern artistic expressions. Each moment celebrated the diversity and beauty of Serbian ethnology, inspiring admiration for the skilled artisans and designers preserving these time-honored traditions.

An Exclusive Highlight: The Heritage Collection by Ankara Olgunlasma Institute

A highlight of the Ethnology Festival was The Heritage Collection, an exclusive fashion line by the renowned Ankara Olgunlasma Institute, Turkey's premier cultural and fashion institute. This collection represented a breathtaking fusion of traditional costumes with an avant-garde approach, capturing the richness of Turkish heritage while offering a fresh perspective that felt accessible and contemporary.

The Heritage Collection captivated audiences with its intricate embroidery, luxurious textiles, and masterful tailoring. Each piece was a tribute to Ottoman and Anatolian aesthetics, showcasing elaborate patterns and carefully selected materials that paid homage to Turkey's vibrant cultural history. The presence of Turkey’s First Lady underscored the strong cultural connection between Serbia and Turkey, emphasizing the universal appeal of preserving tradition through innovative design.

Serbian Designers in Focus: Sonja Kristić and Ivana Nanjadanović

Sonja Kristić: "Antithesis" Collection
Sonja Kristić, is a full time professor at FSU, with over 20 years of experience in the Serbian fashion scene. She collection “Antithesis” represents a clash of opposites: established patterns of folk culture, created through traditional handcraft techniques, and internal universe of designer, who recycles, redefines, and challenges their recognizable forms. Her designs transforms the confinement of a woven shawl into the folume of a coat, the softness of an “ordinary,” woolen sweater into restriction of a modern corset, and the modesty of peasant footwear into the luxurious opulence of high fashion.

Ivana Nanjadanović: "Nitomania" Collection
Ivana Nanjadanović’s Nitomania collection was another showstopper at the Ethnology Museum, delighting attendees with its vibrant, textile-centric approach. Nitomania, was born from a a penchant for creating fashion stories. It was imagined from fine woolen yarn, transformed into robust threads. These patterns wove together in colors and textile impressions, growing into this design allegory, which innovative showcases the interaction between between contemporary design and traditional craftmanship, engaging with Serbia’s cultural heritage.

A Two-Day Cultural Extravaganza at the Ethnology Museum

The Ethnology Museum provided a fitting backdrop for the Ethnology Festival, with each room and exhibit enhancing the sense of immersion into Serbia’s cultural landscape. Over two days, the festival offered attendees live music and dance performances, along with interactive discussions on preserving heritage in a rapidly modernizing world. Traditional Serbian delicacies created a warm and inviting atmosphere that encouraged cultural exchange. Goga Grubješić, the festival organizer, orchestrated every detail, ensuring that each guest felt the significance of Serbian culture and the role of fashion as a bridge between past and future.

Belgrade International Ethnology Festival, is organized under the auspices of H.E. Mrs. Tamara Vucic, Serbia’s First Lady. The attendance of Turkiye’s First Lady highlighted the festival’s diplomatic importance, symbolizing a mutual respect for each country’s traditions and artistic achievements.

Serbia as an Emerging Creative Hub

The Ethnology Festival 2024 reinforced Serbia’s status as a burgeoning center for creatives, artists, and entrepreneurs. Serbia’s blend of rich history and progressive vision is drawing international attention, establishing Belgrade as a city poised to rival European fashion capitals like Paris, Milan, and London. The festival illuminated how Serbia's unique cultural legacy, coupled with the creative energy of its designers, positions the country as a key player in the global fashion and art landscape.

For creatives and entrepreneurs, Serbia offers a wealth of opportunities to explore untapped potential, from textile craftsmanship to digital art, and beyond. The Ethnology Museum, with its treasure trove of historical artifacts, made a perfect venue for the event, showcasing Serbia’s artistic traditions in a way that attracted international interest and fostered partnerships that will carry Serbian culture to new heights. For me, attending this event was an unforgettable experience, and I’m thrilled to share Serbia’s incredible artistry with the world.

Through collections like Antithesis and Nitomania, and the stunning Heritage Collection from Turkiye, the festival transcended cultural boundaries, making it clear that Serbia is ready to take its place on the global fashion stage.
